Alleviating hygiene poverty together

Alleviating hygiene poverty together

18 March 2022

We carried out a survey with YouGov last month to understand more about social issues in GB.  It revealed that 16% of 18-24 years olds have been left no choice but to forego hygiene products due to budget restraints and 50% reported dental care products (toothbrushes and toothpaste) are most important to their self-esteem and confidence*.

This research built on findings from our last impact survey, when we heard from 320 charitable organisations in our network who support 18-24 years olds across the UK, who told us about the implications of the pandemic and how rising costs of living are impacting young people even further:

  • 78% reported that more people than ever are facing the decision to eat, heat or keep clean and;
  • 88% have seen that people supported are feeling more anxious or depressed**.

“Many of our young women are on just £57 a week and have to make a choice between buying sanitary products or food. Food always wins.”  YMCA Wellington

We are committed to supporting people who are experiencing hygiene poverty and have increased our appeals to manufacturers, retailers and suppliers to bring you, our charitable network, a more consistent supply of essential personal hygiene products, particularly these:

  • Toilet Roll
  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Period and sanitary products
  • Shampoo
  • Razors
  • Nappies and baby wipes
  • Shower gel
  • Hand wash
  • Washing-up liquid and dishwasher tablets
  • Surface cleaners
  • Bleach & toilet cleaner
  • Laundry products.

* The survey with YouGov Plc was carried out online.  Total sample size was 2048 adults, of which 189 were age 18-24. Fieldwork was undertaken between 27th - 28th January 2022. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).
